FAQS

What is the BARF Diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food)?

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It is a balanced diet designed to mirror what dogs would naturally eat in the wild.

Dry kibble was created for human convenience. It is typically low in moisture and high in carbohydrates, preservatives, colorings, and additives. In contrast, fresh food provides living nutrients that better support your dog’s health.

Portion Size: How Much Should My Dog Eat?

The right amount depends on your dog’s size, age, activity level, health, and metabolism. As a general guideline:

  • Adult dogs: 2–3% of ideal body weight per day

  • Puppies (after weaning): 5–10% of body weight, adjusted by age

Use a feeding calculator or consult us for a more precise recommendation.

Pregnant or nursing dogs require specific adjustments—please reach out for guidance.

How to Transition to Raw Food

Allow a 12–24 hour fasting period before introducing raw food. Serve it fresh from the refrigerator—no cooking or heating needed.

Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are used to kibble. If your dog doesn’t eat right away, remove the food, refrigerate it, and offer it again at the next meal. It’s normal for dogs to skip a meal during the first 24 hours of transition.

As long as your dog is hydrated and behaving normally, there’s no cause for concern. If you notice lethargy, refusal to drink water, or unusual behavior, consult your veterinarian.

Can I Mix Kibble with Raw Food?

It is not recommended. Raw food contains around 70% moisture, while kibble has about 10%. This difference can interfere with digestion when combined.

If you have leftover kibble, consider donating it to shelters or rescue organizations.

Is Fresh Food More Expensive Than Kibble?

Not necessarily. A fresh, balanced diet can be comparable—or even more economical—than premium kibble when you consider long-term benefits such as fewer vet visits, improved dental health, and overall vitality.

Be cautious with unusually low-cost “fresh” options, as they may rely on lower-quality ingredients. Ingredient quality matters.

Will My Dog Gain Weight on Fresh Food?

Fresh diets are naturally balanced and typically lower in unnecessary carbohydrates.

If your dog is overweight, feed slightly less than 2% of their current weight until they reach their ideal weight. Reach out if you need support with adjustments.

What If My Dog Doesn’t Want to Eat?

Appetite can vary for many reasons. For example, females in heat often eat less temporarily.

Some dogs also benefit from occasional natural fasting. If your dog skips a meal but remains energetic and hydrated, simply refrigerate the food and offer it again later.

If appetite loss persists or is accompanied by low energy or other symptoms, consult your veterinarian.
